Willie Mac Award

tonight's the night. bengie molina is the chalk, and he's certainly a worthy choice, but i think i'd cast my vote for matt cain. or 'hard luck matt cain' as he's known this year. takes the ball every 5th day, pitches his ass off, and the giants will find one way or another to not win the game. never complains. he's a year younger than 'the franchise' but instead of shutting him down, he's still out there mowing them down in a truly lost season. it's not like atlee or tomko, who would always find a way to lose whether you got them one run or eight; he just keeps getting screwed by the baseball gods. hopefully it will just serve to make him a better pitcher down the road.

any other candidates?

Even though I agree with the winner (Molina) and the suggestion of Cain, MacCovey should've insisted that NOBODY win the award after this atrocious season the team put together. Nobody should be getting "honored" when the team, as a whole, wasted a season playing crappy, non-professional caliber baseball.

(You all knew I'd have to add my bitter 2 cents.)

Started this, but not sure it posted.

Willie McCovey would never suggest anything of the kind. He's a devoted Giant, devoted to tradition (one of the things the Giants do better than anyone, year in and year out), and quite honored that the award bears his name. He's a consummate gentleman.

Tradition calls for consistency and longevity.

The award was never performance-based. Check it out if you want at www.baseball-almanac.com/award....shtml

As well, there were a number of players on this years' team who played their hearts out, and their dedication, achievement, and devotion should not be lost in the win-loss outcome of the season. Baseball give us the gift of a game that is individual and team simultaneously. If you're only in it for the win/loss total, you've only opened part of the gift, my friend.

That he is. Not only was he an awesome baseball player in his time, but also a class act. This is why in the dark days of my long ago youth when I was a Dodgers fan (gasp!) growing up in the Valley he became my favorite player.

And yes I'm much better now. *s*

And yes I'm new here. Figures I discover this tribe the day AFTER the season ends. LOL

        Love your pic Jen. *g*

          Hi Todd!

My vote is for Randy Winn. Top 10 in batting this year, stellar right field not seen since Jose Cruz, Jr. and a total professional who brought his 'A' game every day to this 'B' team.
And, he's got that Snidely Whiplash batting stance that cracks me up every at bat.

Hey Angus..fancy meetin you here. :)

Yeah Winn always brings his A game on the field, which was more than I can say for some of these guys this season.

Nope, sorry. Like Jen said, that's not what the award is about. Molina is an excellent choice, as we all know. But how about Randy Winn? He's one of the most professional men in baseball. He just goes out there and does his job day after day, night after night. He's a well-rounded, consistent player who doesn't draw attention to himself or need any special recognition. He just does his job and you never have to worry when he's in. Now that's inspirational.

OKAY, who's going to win it this year? haven't heard any speculation yet, but i think this might be richie's year: he's a well respected veteran who has worked with a lot of young infielders this year.
