Giants shortstop Vizquel to have knee surgery
Henry Schulman, Chronicle Staff Writer

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

(02-26) 14:04 PST SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Some of the Giants' biggest questions this spring were answered, and not in a happy way, with Tuesday's surprising announcement that shortstop Omar Vizquel will have knee surgery today and miss the entire exhibition season.

Vizquel will undergo an arthroscopic procedure in San Francisco to remove torn cartilage from his left knee, an injury that was revealed in an MRI exam Monday. The standard prognosis for this surgery is four to six weeks, although it is unclear how Vizquel's age, 40, might affect his recovery.

Head trainer Dave Groeschner, speaking through a team spokesman, said the team hopes Vizquel will be able to play by the first week of the regular season, "but the knee will tell us."

With Vizquel out, Kevin Frandsen will become the primary shortstop this spring. He was supposed to compete for the second-base job with Ray Durham, who returns to being the everyday guy. Durham is dealing with his own injury, a sore right shoulder, which forced him to curtail his work Tuesday. Manager Bruce Bochy said Durham's shoulder felt better than it did Monday.

Jack-of-all-trades Rich Aurilia will get most of the time at third base.

Although the Giants expressed hope that Vizquel will miss little or no time in the regular season, his surgery is concerning because the 11-time Gold Glover is supposed to be cornerstone of a defense-oriented team in the wake of Barry Bonds' departure.

"He will be missed during spring training," said pitcher Noah Lowry, whose game is geared toward inducing groundballs. "At the same time, Omar being the way he is, he'll be back and ready to go when we'll need him."

This will be Vizquel's second knee operation. He underwent a similar surgery on his right knee in September, 2003. He reported the left-knee pain early in camp and was held out of conditioning and baseball work, but pushed himself to return to the field so he could gauge the seriousness of the injury.

"I felt a little pop when I was running, and I wanted to see if I could (withstand) the pain, and I couldn't," Vizquel said through a team spokesman as he left Scottsdale Stadium.

Team orthopedist Dr. Ken Akizuki will remove the torn portions of Vizquel's medial meniscus this afternoon. Vizquel is expected to return to camp Thursday to begin his rehabilitation and help guide Frandsen at short.

The Giants are making a significant statement of faith in their homegrown, 25-year-old infielder to play the most difficult infield position. They could have gone with Aurilia, an experienced shortstop, and had Frandsen play third.

The move to short will test Frandsen and help team officials in evaluating him. The second-base competition between Frandsen and Durham is not eliminated, just deferred until Vizquel returns.

Frandsen sounded energized by the task at hand.

"When Omar comes back, he's still the guy. It's not like I'm going to be taking his job," Frandsen said. "Right now I'm a fill-in, but I'm not going to act like it. I've got to go in like I'm going to play there every day.

"I'm excited for the challenge. It's not the easiest thing to do, but it's something I'm very comfortable with. We hope Omar gets back as soon as possible. Everybody has a deep respect for him because of the way he plays and the way he acts. I know he's going to help me, because that's the way he is. I know Richie's going to help me. I'm not going to do it alone."

Frandsen has played shortstop in 25 major-league games, 22 of them last year, including 15 starts. The Giants gave him the opportunity after he played an entire Arizona Fall League season at the position.

Bochy said he expects Frandsen to perform well this spring because of that fall-league experience and a "sense of belonging" he now has in the majors.

Bochy also spoke optimistically about Vizquel's ability to return for the start of the season, or shortly thereafter. Asked if he was concerned about the long-term effects of Vizquel's knee injury, Bochy said, "When he comes back, he's going to be 100 percent. He's not going to have a torn meniscus. If anything, once he rehabs it, he'll be every stronger."

Fellow Giants Fans--

So, at the risk of being flamed beyond recognition, I'm posting the email I sent to a friend last week (he's a Mets fan), when he wrote and asked me for my take on the Bonds home run chase. He asked me not to be a homer, and to try to be objective. (Ha!)

His request gave me an opportunity to put down on paper how I feel about all this, and, since it's about to happen, I thought I'd post it to you all. Call it a fit of self-expression (which I may well live to regret). I don't pretend to address the whole mess--the cheating accusations, Giants payroll issues, etc, since those weren't on the topic.

I don't know--I guess with the HR record almost broken, and then with Coach Walsh's passing today, I must be feeling sentimental.

Feel free to agree, disagree, all-out flame (but nicely and with style, of course:), or ignore.

Jen

OK, what's my take on Bonds and the chase? That's a pretty general question, but I'll try to answer it honestly. I can't and don't pretend to objectivity and nothing requires that I do. I'm a fan. But I will give you the most rational, honest response I can, based on who I am. You may judge my response any way you want, naturally. But remember--you asked:)

First before all, I think this has been a very, very long time in coming, for everyone involved. The Giants. Their fans. MLB. Fans of other teams. The sports media. And most especially, the man himself.

There is no one involved in this, either peripherally or directly, that isn't tired of it. The commissioner, Bonds's detractors, fans of other teams, Giants fans, soccer fans, football fans, golf fans--everyone. Even people like me, who want it for him, for his father's memory, and for his fans, for team he plays for, for the legacy it will leave for the Bay Area and the Giants organization, his godfather, and for history it will make, is tired and we want it over. We're only human. On that, I think we all agree.

Barry's getting old. His bat is slower. His legs are tired. He's swinging at pitches he would have laughed at even a couple of years ago. He knows every one of these things. However he got to this place, whatever derision he deserves or doesn't deserve, whatever he did or did not do, however much money he may have, he is getting old, he is tired, and he is utterly alone.

There is no one, save Hank Aaron, who could come close to knowing what this pressure is like for him. And with considerable due respect, even Aaron didn't have the level of media scrutiny that today's players have--even taking away the steriods scrutiny and just talking about media coverage today vs. 1973. It's not remotely close to the same.

I've never bought into the notion that Barry doesn't care what fans think of him. He cares a great deal-just can't afford to let it show if he chooses to climb these types of mountains. No one who has accomplished aspired the impossible can let their feelings show, or they'll fail. And the closer he gets to the top of this particular mountain, the steeper the climb.

However, I've always bought into the notion that he's never cared what the media thinks of him. It's 110% true. It's old-school, it's inconvenient, it's maddening, and in the short term, it's made things much tougher for him, but the belief that 'we don't trust the media' was pounded into him by Bobby and Willie, and it's part of him like his eye color. It's in there the same way 'we don't walk into the street in front of cars' is in there for most people. And on balance, believe it or don't, I think it's served him well.

That he will break the record is not in doubt, I think we also agree on that. After that, it's up to each individual fan to decide how they feel about it. I don't think people will really know how they feel until some time goes by. We all need to put some ice into the fire of the emotions we have on the topic, whether positive or negative. Like every historical event, it's time that tells the tale, and all of history is subject to interpretation, isn't it?

Me? I'm a fan, so I'm selfish and come from my heart. That's my job. My father taught me to understand where I am on this crazy food chain and what the upside and downside of that place is. I began to learn the downside the day the Niners left Ronnie Lott open as a Plan B free agent, and I graduated from that school the day they traded Joe Montana--Joe Montana!--to the Kansas City Chiefs.

But there's an upside too. I want Barry to break the record and go on, and on--and as a Giant. I don't want that ball to stop sailing over the fence. I'm grateful for all the moments he and the Giants have gifted me with--every one of them, up or down, flush or bust. It's passion--not rational, not sensible, and probably not right, but I can't help it. There are strong, powerful, rich individuals over every fan's head that have to be smart, rational, careful, cagey. But I'm not a GM, I'm not an owner. I'm a fan. Fans get to be passionate, selfish, joyful, heartbroken--everything that comes with having all the devotion and none of the control. And thank God.

When Barry finally breaks it, I'll be deliriously happy for him, for myself as a fan, and for baseball fans all over the world. I'll be relieved, grateful, happy, sad--you name it. I'll cry tears of joy that it's over, that it happened at all, that my father's not standing next to me when it happens, AND that he's watching from up there with Barry's father and all the others, that a door will close and a similar door may never open.

Hang all the rest of it. For me it's always been about baseball. I never expected it to be perfect.

I will never--even with the passing of time--regret one single second of being a Bonds fan.

talking about the 2007 giants is just too depressing. so let's go back 20 years, to the good old days of 1987. you had to like those kids.

on july 29th the giants are having a promotion offering one of four bobbleheads from the 1987 team. as far as i can tell they haven't announced who yet. so, who do you think they will choose? who do you think they should choose? and which one do you want handed to you as you make your way through the turnstiles?

i think they will be:

will clark
jeffrey leonard
robby thompson
krukow

but i wouldn't mind seeing roger craig, rick reuschel, or don robinson holding a club. mitchell came over in july, so i think he'll have to wait a couple years.

and i hope i get the hac man, with one flap down.

Little League coaches must wince every time one of these two appears. Vlad has a strike zone that extends from on deck circle to on deck circle and as high as the announcers booth. Ichiro moves every part of his body in a tight circle in a paroxysm of useless torque and then slaps a - what? - power-slap-bunt past somebody.
Weirdweirdweird. Effective. But weird.
And all game long - when i could stand to listen to Chris Berman - they kept talking about how Ichiro was splashing balls rover and over during batting practice. I heard the same thing afterwards on Sportscenter, and the next day on ESPN. DID ANYBODY SEE ANY VIDEO OF THIS? I mean, it's the cool thing about that park, it's on the frickin' logo of the all-star game, it's the best players in the game, and NOBODY filmed the batting practice of the all stars? I mean, couldn't that have been sponsored by some company too?

Report: Former MLB pitcher Rod Beck dies
June 24, 2007

PHOENIX (TICKER) -- Former major league relief pitcher Rod Beck died Saturday at his home in northeast Phoenix, according to the Arizona Republic website.

Beck was 38.

The cause of death is unknown. Police are investigating because Beck was alone at the time of his death, but no foul play is expected.

The righthander was a relief pitcher for the San Francisco Giants (1991-97), Chicago Cubs (1998-99), Boston Red Sox (1999-2001) and San Diego Padres (2003-2004).

In 13 seasons, he compiled a 38-45 record and a 3.30 ERA with 286 saves.

In 2004, Beck dealt with personal problems during spring training and struggled on the mound before being released by San Diego in August.

Beck's best season was in 1993 when he recorded 48 saves, including a record 24 straight for the Giants.

Dear Season Ticket Holder,

This evening, we will announce that Barry Bonds, the 14-year Giants veteran and seven-time National League Most Valuable Player, signed a one-year contract with the Giants.

As you’ve probably heard, the process of negotiating this contract was complex, lengthy and highly unconventional. This decision was not taken lightly and we spent significant time evaluating all of the elements and circumstances surrounding the negotiations before we made a final determination to move forward.

Of particular concern were the allegations against Barry in the New York Daily News on January 12th. We consider any action by one player to unfairly damage the reputation of another player to be a serious matter. Based on the information that we have at hand in this matter and in discussions with both players, all of the facts have not been accurately portrayed. After evaluating the situation and its potential impact on clubhouse chemistry, we came to the conclusion that the Giants’ players will be able to function as a team committed to supporting each other and dedicated to doing everything they can to succeed on the playing field.

Additionally, we felt that with these assurances, signing Barry to a one-year contract helped us pursue a long-term strategy toward getting the club back on track. With his presence in our lineup and only a one-year contractual commitment, we were able to avoid the temptation to trade away some of our valuable young pitching talent and were able to free up long-range funds to acquire a front line pitcher. These decisions enabled us to sign Barry Zito, retain our promising and highly sought-after young pitchers and fill our need for a power hitter in the middle of our lineup. We believe that this combination of moves provides the Giants with a better chance of winning in 2007 and in the years ahead.

You may also be interested to know that even with the signing of the 42-year-old Bonds, the average age of the 2007 Giants will be 30.7 years versus 32.7 in 2006. So we have gotten younger and presumably healthier as we stated we would try to do when the 2006 season ended.

I understand that this has been a particularly controversial and difficult decision and that there are strong opinions on both sides of the issue. I received letters, emails, phone calls and had many conversations with many of our season ticket holders during our Fanfest. I truly appreciate your passion for the Giants as we work through these complex issues. At the end of the day, I believe we have put together an exciting team for the coming season.

Like you, I am pleased that we have been able to complete this process so that we can all turn our attention to the day when pitchers and catchers report to Arizona on February 14. Thank you again for your commitment to the Giants and I look forward to seeing you at Spring Training or when we open our All-Star Season at AT&T Park.

Sincerely,

Fer fuck's sake. How many more black eyes can this franchise take from Barry? Since the contract was never finalized, I really hope the Giants just offer him the league minimum and tell him take it or leave it. This guy's obviously an awful teammate if he's going to pull a Palmeiro defense on one of the renowned good clubhouse guys like Mark Sweeney. Has anyone else had enough of Bonds?

And, obviously, MacGowan's first priority is being fiscally responsible, not winning it all.
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/archive/2006/12/09/SPGG8MSNNB1.DTL

Giants: no plan, no pride -- and no chance

The Giants' season is over, a lost cause before it begins. For that you can thank Peter Magowan, chief executive Larry Baer and general manager Brian Sabean. If any of those men want to acknowledge their resistance to the Barry Bonds signing, stand up and be counted right now. Otherwise, the three of them go down with the ship.

Viewed as a procession of logical steps, the lead-up to Thursday's agreement can be justified. The Angels made a seven-year offer for Alfonso Soriano and got outbid by $21 million. The deals signed by Carlos Lee and Gary Matthews Jr. were preposterous. The Giants didn't have the means to trade for Andruw Jones, Vernon Wells or Manny Ramirez.

In a sense, then, they never really had a chance in the big-name market. They also had a desolate farm system and a massive hole in the cleanup spot, with a choice that pretty much came down to Bonds or Artie Gigantino. So they painted themselves in a corner, signed Bonds out of desperation and guaranteed themselves a morbid, nationwide fascination with their pitifully inadequate team.

Where Sabean went wrong is claiming the Bonds move "makes baseball sense." No, it makes freak-show sense, and that's all the Giants want to be: a freak show. This column will always claim that Bonds is the most compelling at-bat in baseball, that he's the most sure-fire Hall of Famer since Mickey Mantle. What he doesn't do is make his team, or his teammates, better. It's one thing to be led by a prime-time Bonds, as the Giants were in their World Series season of 2002. It's another to be dragged into oblivion by a man who has lost any sense of professionalism.

As Bonds finally got healthy down the stretch last year, the Giants were driven out of contention with alarming dispatch (final record: 76-85). Worse yet, Bonds sat out a number of crucial games for no apparent reason other than, you know, he felt like it. In the most revealing episode of the Bay Area off-season, a published report listed the times Bonds had taken off his uniform when the Giants needed him to pinch-hit, how he was asked to play left field by manager Felipe Alou but refused, how he was napping in the clubhouse during the Dodgers' pennant-clinching victory in San Francisco.

Magowan, Baer and Sabean not only ignored that, they didn't hear the signs. Countless fans expressed their outrage at being characterized as mindless, pro-Bonds idiots. Omar Vizquel said publicly that Bonds should be out of left field and in the American League. Mark Sweeney, while not mentioning Bonds specifically in a KNBR interview with Ralph Barbieri, made repeated references to players "pulling together" and "being on the same page" and "every night," suggesting that such unity is vital for any team struggling to contend.

The Giants won't ever be on the same page as Bonds. Magowan's lame forecast to the contrary, Bonds will be the elephant-like "centerpiece" of every story all season. For months, the clubhouse atmosphere will be ruined by a pack of national writers who despise Bonds, and the notion of him breaking Henry Aaron's record, but will nevertheless follow him everywhere (last year, frustrated Giants had to invent team meetings just to clear the place out). And when he does break the record, Aaron staying home in disgust, commissioner Bud Selig will be faking every gesture and tribute.

Magowan, Baer and Sabean apparently didn't consider any of this, but hell, why would they? They have no plan. They've come back with a sad replica of last year's disaster, one without a future or even a present. I've fiercely defended Sabean over the years, and he'll probably make a few moves to improve the pitching staff, but he's not exactly on a roll. The Giants are now two solid levels below the Dodgers, and Sabean is most remembered for handing Alou an assortment of wilting flowers: Edgardo Alfonzo, Jeff Fassero, Jason Christiansen, Jim Brower, Jose Vizcaino, Mike Stanton, Steve Finley, Matt Herges, Armando Benitez -- there must be more. Without question, Sabean is merely the executor of Magowan's pipe-dream fantasies, but at some point he has realize how inept it makes him look.

Does Bonds make the Giants more watchable? Absolutely -- sort of like a really massive crash makes the Indy 500 more memorable. This ranks among the most cowardly, gutless baseball decisions of the post-war era, but then again, it would take a pretty stiff dose of courage for Sabean (and many other people in the organization) to say what they really think, like "His steroid associations have embarrassed us for far too long," or "We've grown tired of looking the other way," or "We're sick of him running the team and the way it's built." So everybody just caved in, and now Bonds has a contract (potentially even more lucrative than last year's) that will stifle the Giants' more pressing financial needs.

It's astonishing to think that the Giants expect Bonds to stay healthy and skate through the mine fields of the federal government, the IRS and the Major League Baseball investigation, all the while hitting 45 homers, leading the team to glory and being a really cool teammate. It's a little bit frightening, actually. Meanwhile, here is management's message to new manager Bruce Bochy: Screw your first season. Suck it up. Sheer idolatry will get Bochy through the first couple of months, but then some very harsh reality will set in.

So here's to the 2007 Giants, a team with no plan -- and worse yet, no pride. See you in fourth place, with a very unhappy superstar making everyone miserable.

Bonds' 'media hypocrisy' a reality
posted: Saturday, December 9, 2006

As Barry Bonds closed in on Babe Ruth's home run mark last spring, he said that one thing that bothered him was "the media hypocrisy" that cited and condemned him and a precious few others in an era when likely thousands of players used performance-enhancing drugs.
Fast-forward to the winter meetings at Disney this week. Bonds was brought into the Dolphin Hotel by agent Jeff Borris because there was such a scant Bonds market, yet the buzz through the few days was for pitchers -- and sometimes players -- getting contracts no one this side of Denny Neagle dreamed possible. Scouts, coaches, managers and even general managers privately discussed declined velocity, odd injuries, and more detriments in some of those pitchers and players, and yet there was no outrage at the cash outlay to those players, not the way bystanders cheered for teams to pass on Bonds.

Oh, Barry brings much of that on himself with his swagger and "I'm Barry Bonds -- you're not" attitude. But to take moral stances on evil seen and heard without balance is, at best, the mirror image of what alienates Bonds from the public.

When the Hall of Fame voting approached, New York columnists railed against Mark McGwire, worse than they railed against Jason Giambi before he began hitting home runs again. There was a column about the joy of getting the ballot and not voting for McGwire. "Cheater" is the evil-doer phrase of the era. Yet, when the Mets re-signed Guillermo Mota -- and that 3-0, 1.00, 18, 10, 2, 2, 5, 19 line after he couldn't pitch in Cleveland bears repeating -- to a two-year contract while under suspension, it did not pique the moralist majority, not even those who chide the Yankees for Giambi, payroll, or other issues to root for the Mets.

Sammy Sosa suggested to Pedro Gomez that he might like to return -- no interest, even in Chicago. Rafael Palmeiro no longer exists, as McGwire no longer exists in St. Louis. Those who cite the Shakepsearean Jose Canseco on McGwire and Bonds were not heard during the wonderful run of the Detroit Tigers on Pudge Rodriguez.

And this week there was an "it's a wonderful life" spin to the $10 million-plus signings, many of which had as many questions raised as in the magical worlds of Bonds, Sosa and McGwire.

The Mets need Mota, and have every right to sign him. Those teams that signed players and pitchers whose growth, recovery and power -- hitting and throwing -- have increased dramatically have been questioned in the stands and the back rooms of ballparks across America. The drug use is all part of the culture of which most people in the industry and the media know little.

We aren't doing shit next year, and I think that 16 mil should have gone towards zito. who cares if we need offense? It's not like we're one offensive signing away from the world series. We should sign zito for six years, and have our pitching core (zito cain and lowry) carry us until we can build back our offense.

exactly what I didn't want to happen this offseason is happening so far. instead of blowing up the team from the ground up, we have fallen back into the "surround Barry with old fogies" model that has worked oh-so-well.

Although, I will admit that games are more exciting when Barry's involved. And love him or hate him, every one of you counts the number of outs til his next at bat. Part of me is kinda happy, and part of me knows it's time to move on. But we'll get to watch him for one more season at least.

Giants' Snow retires; to work for team
JANIE McCAULEY
Associated Press

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - First baseman J.T. Snow announced his retirement Thursday after a 15-year major league career, and he will rejoin the San Francisco Giants in several roles.

Snow has been hired by the Giants, his team from 1997-2005, for about 20 games as a radio broadcaster. He also will serve as a roving minor league coach and an instructor at spring training, in addition to advising general manager Brian Sabean and making personal appearances on behalf of the club.

"I'm looking forward to it," said the 38-year-old Snow, a six-time Gold Glove winner who already lives in the Bay Area. "I think it will be a fun transition from playing and I look forward to the next step and the next chapter in my life. I knew this day would be coming. It's inevitable for all of us."

Snow last played for the Boston Red Sox, who designated him for assignment on June 19. He was batting .205 in only 44 at-bats when the club let him go.

Snow owns a career batting average of .268 with 189 homers and 877 RBIs in parts of 15 seasons, playing 1,715 games with the Yankees, Angels, Giants and Red Sox.

A left-handed hitter with an impressive playoff track record, he thought he might catch on with a contending team for the stretch run last season, but it didn't happen.

"It's a humbling experience when you're talking to your agent and he says no one's calling," Snow said.

Snow reached the World Series with the Giants in 2002, and they lost in seven games. During Game 5 against the Anaheim Angels, the sure-handed Snow made perhaps his most alert play.

Snow had already scored on Kenny Lofton's triple and David Bell was running home when it became dangerous - Darren Baker, the 3 1/2-year-old bat boy son of manager Dusty Baker, was standing behind Angels catcher Bengie Molina, eager to grab Lofton's bat.

In a flash, Snow dashed in and scooped up the boy by the collar of his oversized jacket, pulling him from harm's way.

When the Giants parted ways with Snow after the 2005 season, Sabean, executive vice president Larry Baer and owner Peter Magowan planted the seed about Snow one day working for the club. Most of his broadcast work will be at home games providing analysis alongside play-by-play announcer Dave Flemming.

Snow's late father, Jack, a star receiver in the NFL, also went into broadcasting after his playing career ended. While J.T. has no experience in the booth, Baer said he has "great insights."

"In the spirit of other great Giants, we'd like to have a long-standing relationship with him," Baer said. "He has a winning attitude. You can't get enough of exposing the players you're very proud of having worn your uniform to your current players."

Snow will have the freedom to explore his options and see where he fits in best, and he didn't rule out the possibility of coaching or managing someday.

For now, he's been enjoying the chance to coach his son's flag football team.

"I'm really intrigued to work with minor league kids," Snow said on a conference call. "We all were there once."

He is most looking forward to helping develop minor leaguers - not to mention guiding good friend Rich Aurilia as he makes the transition to first base as San Francisco's new starter in Snow's old spot.

"That would be a challenge," Snow said. "It will be a lot of fun."

Snow and Hall of Famer Willie McCovey are the only Giants first basemen to make nine straight starts on opening day since the team moved west to San Francisco in 1958.

"I can honestly look back and say I gave it all I had," Snow said. "I have no regrets. I have nothing left to give as a player. I'm all tapped out. I had fun. If you told me at 21 I would retire at 38, I probably wouldn't have believed you."

Barry Bonds not offered arbitration

RONALD BLUM
Associated Press

NEW YORK - Tom Glavine is staying with the Mets, and Ray Durham with the Giants. Barry Bonds seems ready to leave San Francisco.

Twenty-five free agents were offered salary arbitration by their former teams before Friday's midnight deadline, a group that included Oakland's Barry Zito and San Francisco's Jason Schmidt, the top available starting pitchers. The Giants declined arbitration with Bonds, coming off a $90 million, five-year contract.

"San Francisco's decision not to offer Barry arbitration speaks volumes of their true intentions to have him back in a Giants uniform for the 2007 season," said Bonds' agent, Jeff Borris. "It has been well documented that the Giants were trying to sign Alfonso Soriano, Carlos Lee, Gary Matthews and Juan Pierre. And they have been working diligently in trying to trade for Manny Ramirez. The Giants' actions demonstrate that Barry obviously is not a priority to them."

In the past, the deadline was Dec. 7 and players not offered arbitration couldn't re-sign with their former teams until May 1. But under baseball's new labor contract, agreed to during the World Series, the deadline lost much of its importance.

Now, free agents can return to their former teams at any time. By not offering arbitration, all a club loses is the right to receive amateur draft picks if a highly ranked player signs with another team. Free agents who were offered arbitration have until Dec. 7 to accept.

Houston declined to offer arbitration to all five of its former players who are free agents, a group that includes Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte.

San Diego offered arbitration to six players: pitchers Alan Embree, Chan Ho Park and David Wells; first baseman Ryan Klesko; outfielder Dave Roberts and second baseman Todd Walker.

Other free agents who received arbitration offers were starting pitchers Miguel Batista (Arizona), Ted Lilly (Toronto), Gil Meche (Seattle), Vicente Padilla (Texas), and Mark Mulder and Jeff Suppan (St. Louis); relievers Keith Foulke (Boston), Scott Schoeneweis (Cincinnati), Ron Villone (New York Yankees) and Guillermo Mota and Roberto Hernandez (New York Mets); infielders Rich Aurilia (Cincinnati), Tony Graffanino (Milwaukee) and Julio Lugo (Los Angeles Dodgers); and outfielder Jose Guillen (Washington).

Texas offered arbitration to Lee, an outfielder whose $100 million, six-year contract with Houston hasn't been finalized, and Philadelphia offered arbitration to outfielder David Dellucci, who has an $11.5 million, three-year preliminary agreement with Cleveland.

Also, free-agent utility infielder Geoff Blum and the San Diego Padres agreed to a $900,000, one-year contract. Left fielder Scott Podsednik agreed to a $2.9 million, one-year contract with the Chicago White Sox that avoided arbitration. And Hernandez was close to an agreement with Cleveland.

Glavine agreed to a $10.5 million, one-year contract with New York and opted against a possible return to the Atlanta Braves. Now the Mets can relax as they talk to Zito and discuss possible trades this offseason.

"With Tommy now on board, I think we still will look at ways to improve the starting rotation," general manager Omar Minaya said.

Ten wins shy of 300 after going 15-7 with a 3.82 ERA this year, Glavine helped the Mets win their first division title since 1988. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner then went 2-1 with a 1.59 ERA in three postseason starts as New York advanced to Game 7 of the NL championship series before losing to St. Louis.

Glavine, a left-hander who will be 41 next season, lives in the Atlanta suburb of Alpharetta, and his family commuted to New York on weekends during the school year to join him. He thought long about whether he wanted to return to the Braves, his team from 1987-2002, or stay with the Mets, who signed him before the 2003 season. He told the Mets he would make his decision before the winter meetings, which begin Monday in Florida.

"I wrestled with it. I think that everybody who knows me knows how important my family is to me and knows how much strain it is on my family for me to be in New York," he said. "After four years, it's grown on me. I like the city. I like the fans. I love the organization. They treated me with the utmost respect and that pull to come back to New York was a very strong pull. In the end, it's where we felt like we needed to be, and where we wanted to be."

Durham agreed to a two-year contract worth between $14 million and $15 million. The 35-year-old second baseman, switch-hitter and two-time All-Star, is coming off his best season in years. He batted .293 with career highs of 26 home runs and 93 RBIs for the Giants with a .538 slugging percentage in 498 at-bats. He signed a three-year deal with the club before the 2003 season but has dealt with several leg injuries since his arrival.

Am I the only person sick of hearing all of Giants' ownerships' kvetching over not being able to pay big-time free agents the enormous prices they are going for? Don't get me wrong...I don't think that some of this year's free agent crop deserve what they are getting paid and appreciate the ownership group for keeping the team here in SF and building AT&T Park, but it's also ridiculous that they are now grousing about the hole they've dug themselves into after gutting the farm system for years in order to surround Barry Bonds with marginal veterans. They could have always followed a more fiscally responsible management model, ala the A's, but THEY chose to build the team via free agency and thus put themselves into the situation they are currently in where the team's outlook is beyond bleak for years and years to come. While this run of winning seasons was nice, the Giants still ended up with NOTHING to show for it and thus continued their status of being historically the b!tches of their cross town and historical rivals (the A's and Dodgers, respectively). We deserve better than this...or at least owners who can place becoming a more successful franchise than the A's and Dodgers as higher importance than paying off the mortgage. That's why I think McGowan and the ownership group need to sell the team NOW. They obviously can't afford to run this team any longer, especially with the way they've arranged the organization. I'm sure Larry Ellison, if he were the owner, would NOT accept having the Giants go down in history as the rivals that never truly came close in overall team success to the Dodgers and A's. If they can no longer afford the free agents that they've set up their team to depend upon signing in order to compete, then they should sell the team to someone who can. They've shouldn't be doing what they currently are doing, by signing the Dave Robertses and Rich Aurilias of the world and try to play it off as them still trying to win now. If not sell the team, just flat out say the dreaded "R" word (AKA "rebuild") and let rooks play while detailing to us via their media outlets their new plan to rebuild the team according to a new, more fiscally responsible, model. They've got to realize that they will lose more fans by treating us like we're stupid, trying to force-feed us the notion that this team will compete next season with a starting lineup that looks like the end of most teams' benches, than they will if they honestly have a plan to rebuild. If they don't have a plan to get this team caught up with the A's and the Dodgers, then they shoud just sell the team to someone who does.

Is Brian Sabean that pissed that we dared question his recent deals that he's just now going to arrogantly take this franchise into the toilet in hopes of getting fired and gettting hired by his buddy Colletti to piss off the local media and Giants fans? C'mon Sabean...start earning your paycheck and stop hanging onto the glory of that Matt Williams for Jeff Kent deal. Or was it really Ned prodding your ass to action while you were always the one that was trigger shy all these years?

I hope he feels semi-responsible for their win because that last start against HIS Cardinals where he essentially pitched slow-pitch softball against them helped get them into the playoffs by holding off the surging Astros.

PHEW!!! A big sigh of relief from me. I'm glad they went out of the organization for their hire. I'm not sure if Bochy is a guy that is as fiery as I would have hoped (that Giants clubhouse of the last couple seasons has just been lethargic) but I'm personally just glad that Wotus didn't get hired. Also, with Bochy getting hired, that hopefully also means that all of those coaches by title only that have been sitting on their asses the last couple of seasons saying and doing nothing except cross their fingers in hopes that the Giants players will be able to somehow correct their problems on their own will FINALLY get their well earned pink slips.

What do you all think of the Bochy hire?

Though Piniella was not my first choice to fill the managerial void, I still have to RIP here:

WHY IS WOTUS THE ONLY PERSON TO BE INTERVIEWED SO FAR?!?!?!

Why are they even considering ANY of those lax, uninspiring, lazy because they've had so much job security within the organization for SO long CHUMPS as the manager? If anything, they should be considering giving those guys in the "coaching" staff (I use quotes there because it seems from the reports I've read about the last couple of Giants seasons that the coaching staff in general were a bunch of hands-off, mutes who left the players to their own devices and collected paychecks for sitting on a bench in a Giants uni) pinkslips. All I know is that if they hire ANYONE from the current coaching staff as the manager, that's a sign that the Giants ownership and management don't give a crap about winning and are perfectly happy with the team being stinko horrible as long as they can still cater to people going to the games just for the mall food court and the Bonds homerun derby. Hell, just interviewing one of those schmucks is virtually a slap in all of our faces. FUCK SABEAN AND MACGOWAN. GRRRRR!!!!!!

P.S. Anyone else finding a little pleasure in seeing the A's getting punked by the Tigers. Maybe God doesn't hate us after all...well, make that, he does hate us right now THAT MUCH.
